Three cities to visit for Day of the Dead 2020

Mexico City

Mexico City’s spectacular Day of the Dead parade is probably the festival’s most famous event. So it might shock you to hear that the first-ever edition took place in 2016! Its launch came after the release of James Bond movie, Spectre, in which Daniel Craig’s 007 goes on an epic chase through a fictional Day of the Dead parade in the capital. Despite its relative youth, however, the epic parade is a breath-taking event full of giant skeleton floats and hordes of participants in dazzling costumes.

Oaxaca

For a completely authentic experience, Oaxaca is the place to be. The culture-rich city, in the state of the same name, blossoms over the Day of the Dead period as families build elaborate and colorful alters to their lost loved-ones. The celebrations will take place across the city, but travelers looking for the “true” Day of the Dead experience should head to a cemetery to see the grave-side offerings – one of the most touching traditions that take place over the festival.

San Miguel de Allende

Head to San Miguel de Allende, a beautiful Colonial city in Guanajuato, for La Calaca Festival, an artistic extravaganza packed with fun Day of the Dead-themed activities. There’s a bit of something for everyone; paint workshops, dance shows, contemporary gastronomy, and much more. The festival offers travelers the chance to become part of the Day of the Dead celebrations, rather than simply watching them. Just come with a camera and show up to as many events as you can!
